Service Learning at McGovern (SLaM) is as service-learning organization lead by medical students at McGovern Medical School. Student leaders of SLaM, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Mallika Tripathy, and Brian Crowley presented a poster at the recent AAMC annual meeting, Learn Serve Lead 2023, held in Seattle, WA, in early November. Their poster, “Student-led Service-learning Organization and Impact on Social Determinants of Health Awareness,” shared the results of a pre-post survey conducted with medical students to understand their knowledge and awareness of social determinants of health surrounding an elective in which students worked with partner organizations that serve Houston’s vulnerable communities. Students’ conference attendance was supported in part by the McGovern Center and UTHealth Houston through the Quality Enhancement Plan.
