A recent piece, “Pelvic and Prostate Exams Without Patient Consent Banned From Medical Training,” in Everyday Health includes comments from Keisha Ray, PhD, about changes to federal guidelines banning the controversial teaching practice of allowing these exams without patient consent. She notes that gaining medical knowledge has often included abusing vulnerable and marginalized people, including “Black people, Jewish people, poor people, people from low income backgrounds, people with not a lot of political or social power, or people who are in prison.” Ray explains, while medical students must learn, they must do so in ways that do not harm patients.
