Biography

Marianne Parrish Florian holds a post-doctoral fellowship in religion and medicine, shared between McGovern Medical School and the Institute for Spirituality and Health. Prior to this position, she taught courses in religion and health at the University of South Florida. Dr. Florian’s academic background spans religious studies, cognitive sciences, and contemplative studies. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the ways healthcare professionals integrate compassion, ethics, and spiritual practices within healthcare settings.

Dr. Florian has co-written articles in journals, including PLoS OneMindfulness, and Frontiers in Psychology, and is working on a book manuscript for Routledge titled The Experience of Learning Compassion Meditation. She teaches ethics and humanities courses for undergraduate medical students through the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics. As a program leader for ISH’s Rabbi Samuel E. Karff Center for Healthcare Professionals, she develops spirituality and health courses and curricula, mentors student researchers, and helps plan and host health professions conferences.

Dr. Florian serves as an editorial board associate for the Journal of Medical Humanities and is a certified instructor of Cognitively Based Compassion training (CBCT®).
