A recent Texas Monthly piece, “Racism Persists in Health Care. This Houston Bioethicist Aims to Change That, ” profiles Keisha Ray, PhD, a tenured associate professor with the McGovern Center. The profile shares Ray’s personal experience with bias in medicine and its connection to her current work of studying the health of Black people. The piece also discusses Ray’s book, Black Health: The Social, Political, and Cultural Determinants of Black People’s, which was published this year and explores the worse outcomes of Black health in America. As a bioethicist, Ray devotes much of her work to educating medical students and the public about institutional biases and barriers affecting Black health as well as the need to effect change in healthcare to address these. As she explains, “No one has good health in a world where there’s a large group of people that have poor health.”
