What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
Medicine has had a role in my life since birth. Due to complications at birth I spent much of my childhood in and out of Scottish Rite Hospital. Thanks to the dedication of my pediatric specialists, I was able to recover and eventually play Division I volleyball. My family also has deep roots in healthcare. My dad is a nurse, and two of my sisters are doctors. Seeing their commitment to healing and service left a lasting impression and invigorated my own desire to pursue medicine.
Why did you choose McGovern Medical School?
From my interview with Dr. Bednarz-Prashad and MS4 Kayli Quinton, McGovern stood out for the authentic community. No one is expected to fit a mold; you’re encouraged to be fully yourself. During preview day, when I got lost, Victoria Michael didn’t just point me in the right direction she made sure I was okay, and stayed in touch with me even after leaving the school. That small moment stayed with me. McGovern has continued to feel like the kind of space where I can be challenged, supported, and most importantly, be myself.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the communities I’ve served and the ones I dream of reaching. I think about my family in Nigeria, many of whom still live without access to basic healthcare. Their reality pushes me to keep going, to do something meaningful with the opportunities I’ve been given. I carry their stories with me in every step of this journey.
Who is your hero?
My parents and my grandmother are my heroes. They left behind everything they knew to start over in a new country, not just for themselves, but for our family. They built a life from the ground up, carrying hope on their backs. I stand on the foundation they built. Every opportunity I’ve had, this one included, was made possible by their sacrifice. I owe them everything.
What is your ultimate goal for your career in medicine?
My goal is to push the boundaries of healthcare innovation and expand access to care not only in Texas, but also Nigeria. Being able to return to the communities that raised me and to reach those still waiting to be seen is the ultimate goal. I want to be part of building something that lasts, something that reaches further than me.
What kind of emotions do you feel as you’re beginning medical school?
Gratitude. This is a moment I’ve prayed for, worked toward, and dreamt about for years, and to finally be here feels surreal. I’m grounded by the path that led me here, and I’m ready for what’s ahead.
What are you looking forward to most about medical school?
I’m looking forward to all of it! The challenges, successes, and getting to know my classmates. Everything is going to be a new experience for me, so I am excited to have this opportunity.
If you had to pick a medical specialty right now, what would it be and why?
If I had to choose today, I’d say primary care. Working as an EMT taught me what it means to show up for people in their hardest moments, but I often left scenes wondering how they were doing afterward. Primary care gives you the chance to follow someone’s story, not just show up for one chapter. I want to build relationships with my patients and be there with them through their journey.
