What inspired you to want to pursue a career in medicine?
When I was younger, my career aspirations leaned between either professional baseball or paleontology. Only until my aunt became an overnight mom, did I come to appreciate the value and interests of medicine, as she works in Radiology, specifically IT.

While I’m grateful for being accepted to McGovern, including the blood, sweat, and tears of my dream becoming a reality, I could not have done this without my faith, my mom, and countless others. My life from conception until now has been the hallmark of God’s love and mercy for me and my family. Surviving in-utero narcotic abuse, wading through a nasty custody battle, dealing with medical conditions, I feel truly blessed.

During my junior year of college, I was attacked near Houston, leaving me with two brain bleeds, a skull fracture, 36 staples, and a substantial medical bill. I had to leave college, while battling speech, emotional, and physical ailments. I met failure each and every day that helped me appreciate the value of resiliency.

My “why medicine” took a new form. Initially, I wanted to prove to myself and to others of my worth, wanting to make money, and respect. Ironically, a TBI was the wake up call I needed. I now understand what life is like on the other side of care, which solidified my resolve to pursue medicine for the right reasons.

Why did you choose McGovern Medical School?
Choosing McGovern Medical School was one of the most straightforward decisions I’ve made. Located within the largest medical district globally, it offers unparalleled opportunities, a diverse community, and a supportive environment. Transitioning to a larger city like Houston was made seamless by the inclusive and respectful culture fostered by the staff and classmates, for which I am deeply grateful, specifically my Pre-Entry faculty and classmates (thank you all for a great 4 weeks).

What motivates you?
My motivation stems from facing the unknown, embracing leaps of faith, and accepting failure as opportunities for growth. One of my mantras is “learning something new everyday,” which won’t be a stranger for this profession. The sacrifices people have made throughout my life is an additional reminder to keep fighting, which has extended to how I treat others.

Who is your hero?
My hero is my mother, who became an overnight mom when I was four and she was just nineteen. Her selflessness, stepping into that role with unwavering dedication, is something I could never repay. She’s the real MVP, raising me through thick and thin, and without her steadfast love and support, I wouldn’t be here today.

What is your ultimate goal for your career in medicine?
My ultimate goal is to make it to the other side of medical school with a grin, earning the trust of my community, and being a doctor who’s known for his faith in Christ. I’d love to be the doc who brings a little light humor to everyone’s lives, while making connections that last generations.

What kind of emotions do you feel as you’re beginning medical school?
As I begin medical school, I feel a whirlwind of excitement and stress — this is what the bulk of my life has been leading up to, and it’s finally here. The years of adversity have all pointed to this moment. It’s astonishing to see my dreams finally take shape, yet the weight of responsibility and the steep learning curve does bring a healthy dose of nerves. It’s a milestone I’ve fought hard to reach and I’m ready to embrace the unknown.

What are you looking forward to most about medical school?
I am looking forward to developing a routine including: daily learning, skill development, building relationships, getting to know the area, and trying new food.

If you had to pick a medical specialty right now, what would it be and why?
If I were to select a medical specialty, it would be Pediatric Neurosurgery. My personal experience with a craniotomy adds a profound layer of motivation to my pursuit of medicine.

Beyond that, I’m driven to advocate for children, a very vulnerable demographic who deserve a strong voice. My own journey has made me more cognizant of their lives, while striving to fight for their well-being, ensuring they get the care and support they need to thrive.
