What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
Throughout my childhood years, my family and I lived in five different countries. I was born in Domodossola, Italy, where my family is originally from, and was the first to be naturalized as an American. Having lived in so many different countries exposed me to healthcare disparities that exist in our world, and from an early age I knew I wanted to make a difference through medicine.

In college, I started exploring these interests but still felt lost, as I didn’t know much about how the healthcare system in America actually worked. Therefore, I pursued a minor in healthcare management, which helped me understand how the healthcare system functions outside of doctors and medicine. This experience gave me clarity that I was on the right path and inspired me to combine my passion for medicine with my interest in healthcare policy to create more equitable solutions, both at the bedside and behind the scenes.

Why did you choose McGovern Medical School?
From my interview day, it was clear that McGovern was the place for me. Not only was I welcomed with open arms, but I also immediately felt the sense of support and collaboration that defines its community. Being a student-athlete my whole life, this was exactly what I was looking for – a team that helps each other succeed. When I received my prematched offer, it felt like a dream! Plus, having the opportunity to learn at the biggest medical center in the world is unmatched. The opportunities are endless, and I cannot wait to take advantage of them!

Additionally, both my siblings live in Houston. I am very close with my family, so this was a big pull factor for me! I am super excited to finally be close to my favorite people again.

What motivates you?
My future patients and my faith motivate me. I went into medicine to make a real impact on people’s lives, and when times get tough, I remind myself of my “why.” Being trilingual and having lived in several countries, I’ve developed a deep cultural awareness that allows me to connect with patients in ways that are often different from others. Knowing that my background equips me to reach people on a more personal level inspires me to keep going. I believe God has placed me on this path for a reason, and I see the ability to care for and truly connect with others as a gift He’s given me, which I intend to use fully.

Who is your hero?
I would not be here without the unwavering support of both my parents. They are my heroes for uprooting their entire lives in Italy to give my siblings and me the best opportunities to succeed. Leaving behind family, friends, and everything they knew, they not only made the ultimate sacrifice, but also did so with strength, resilience, and a smile on their faces. Because of their courage, I have been able to pursue my dreams, challenge myself in academics and athletics, and build a life filled with opportunity and hope. Grazie mille, Mamma e Papà!

What is your ultimate goal for your career in medicine?
My ultimate goal for my career in medicine is to positively impact the patients, team members, and families that I will interact with. I want to be able to say that I am making a difference in my community, and caring for those around me. At the same time, I aspire to dedicate a few years working with organizations like Doctors Without Borders or other global initiatives, offering medical support to vulnerable populations around the world.

What kind of emotions do you feel as you’re beginning medical school?
There are a lot of emotions as I look forward to these next few weeks. The main one is gratitude! When I think of my first semester as an MS1, I can’t help but look back on all the people who have lifted me up in order to get here. I am thankful for every person and experience that has led me here, and I start medical school with the biggest sense of purpose and appreciation. This journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been deeply meaningful, and I carry with me the strength and support of everyone who believed in me.

What are you looking forward to most about medical school?
I am most looking forward to the connections I will make with my future classmates and patients. There are so many amazing people at McGovern, and I am blessed to be surrounded by them. Additionally, I am looking forward to my growth, both personally and academically.  I know that medical school will challenge me in ways I’ve never experienced before, but I’m ready to embrace that growth and learn more about who I am, the kind of physician I want to become, and the impact I hope to make.

If you had to pick a medical specialty right now, what would it be and why?
If I had to choose a specialty right now, I would choose Emergency Medicine. I love the fast paced environment and thrive under pressure (maybe thanks to my experience as a student athlete). I’ve had the opportunity to shadow in the Emergency Department, and I truly admired how the physicians were equipped to handle anything that came through the doors. However, I want to keep an open mind in medical school and explore all my other interests!
