Wang elected ISSM president

Run Wang, MD, FACS, professor in the Department of Surgery and the Cecil M. Crigler, M.D. Chair in Urology, has been selected as the president-elect for the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) during the World Meeting for Sexual Medicine Oct. 26-30 in Miami.

Wang will serve as president-elect for two years before beginning his 2-year presidential term in 2024. He previously served as president of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by our colleagues worldwide to lead the preeminent society in sexual medicine,” Wang said.

Founded in 1978, the ISSM is an international association for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals and scientists interested in the advancement of male and female sexual health in the world. The mission of the ISSM is to promote the highest standards of care in sexual medicine and to provide the largest and best platform for the exchange of ideas and the latest research in the field.

Wang, also a clinical professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, received his medical degree in 1983 at Southeast University Medical College in Nanjing, China before completing a residency there in 1986. He joined the Department of Surgery at McGovern Medical School as an associate professor in 2006.

He has published extensively in the fields of urology, andrology, men’s health, and sexual medicine and has served as co-editor, guest editor, deputy editor, associate editor, and editorial member for many medical journals. He was a panelist for WHO/ISSM sponsored International Consultations on Sexual Medicine in 2009 and 2015. Wang also holds honorary, concurrent, and visiting professorships in numerous national and international universities.

The ISSM has more than 3,000 members across the globe with seven affiliated regional societies in the world. The ISSM owns four medical journals that publish high-quality, scientific manuscripts or surgical videos in the field of sexual medicine.
