The Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth now offers comprehensive care in southeast Houston. Staffed by Michael Byrd, MD and J. Caleb Simmons, MD the department’s community practice coordinates care for adult, adolescent and pediatric patients at UT Physicians Otorhinolaryngology-Texas Medical Center, UT Physicians Otorhinolaryngology-Southeast and Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital for UTHealth.
“We’re an academic medical center practice that provides comprehensive ENT services to patients who live in outlying suburbs,” says Michael Byrd, MD, an assistant professor, who has special interests in thyroid and parathyroid disorders, salivary gland diseases, laryngeal disorders, ear infections and tonsil and adenoid diseases, as well as conditions of the nose and paranasal sinuses.
“For our patients it’s a great convenience. We can schedule surgeries close to home or, for more complex cases, at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. For patients with complicated ENT issues, we offer the benefit of surgery at a renowned academic medical center, with pre-surgical consultation and follow-up visits in the community.”
Dr. Byrd, who runs a busy, practice in southeast Houston, was joined two years ago by J. Caleb Simmons, MD, an assistant professor of otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School. A Houston native, Dr. Simmons graduated with a degree in biochemistry from Rice University with honors. He received his medical degree at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. While in medical school, he was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following graduation, he returned to Houston for his residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, where he received the Resident Teaching Award in 2015. His clinical interests include thyroid and parathyroid disorders, salivary gland diseases, conditions of the nose and paranasal sinuses, ear disease, hearing loss and sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea. He is interested in medical service abroad as well and has taken medical and surgical trips to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and Kigali, Rwanda.
From their original base at the Southeast clinic, the two otolaryngologists have expanded their practice to Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital, which serves one of the fastest-growing communities in the country. “We view our practice as a gateway to specialized care closer to home,” Dr. Simmons says. “Pearland has the advanced medical equipment and state-of-the-art technology we need to address diverse ENT needs, from quick outpatient visits to procedures requiring inpatient care. We’re equipped to provide care to any patient who walks through the door with an ENT issue – all ages and all complaints. We’re a one-stop shop for families at multiple locations.”
