Laura J. van de Laar, MD, and Jeffrey D. Johnson II, MD, have completed their residencies in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Dr. van de Laar began a fellowship in rhinology and skull base surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in Nashville. Dr. Johnson began a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
“We are very proud of this year’s graduates, both of whom earned prestigious fellowships in the subspecialties of their choice,” says Ronda Alexander, MD, assistant professor of otorhinolaryngology and director of residency training.
A 2015 graduate of McGovern Medical School, Dr. van de Laar grew up in The Woodlands, Texas. She was the Houston Society of Otolaryngology first-place winner in 2019 for her presentation on chronic rhinosinusitis and depression, and received second-place recognition this year for her HSO presentation on the same topic. An article based on her 2020 presentation has been accepted for publication in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. “Dr. van de Laar was one of our own medical students and went on to become a superb resident,” Dr. Alexander says. “An excellent technical surgeon, she led her teams with remarkable aplomb and was a guardian of the esprit-de-corps that makes our program a special place to train.”
An Indiana native, Dr. Johnson is a member of the Indiana University School of Medicine Class of 2015. “After his arrival, Dr. Johnson took Houston by storm. He proved himself to be a dedicated surgeon who cares deeply for his patients,” she says. “His future patients will benefit from his passion for reconstructive surgery during his fellowship and beyond.”
