Dr. William Yao Promoted to Associate Professor

William Yao, MDRhinologist William C. Yao, MD, director of the otorhinolaryngology residency program, has been promoted to associate professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.

Dr. Yao joined the department in 2015 as an assistant professor. He serves as co-director of the UTHealth Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship with Martin J. Citardi, MD, professor and chair of the department, and Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for research.

“I am proud to have Dr. Yao as a member of our department. In just a few years, he has established a complex clinical practice, and he has applied his interests in education for the benefit of our students, residents and fellows,” Dr. Citardi observes.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Yao received his medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2008. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine, where he was recognized with the 2014 Resident Teaching Award. He subsequently completed a fellowship in rhinology and anterior skull base surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School.

Fluent in English and Japanese, Dr. Yao has a strong interest in surgical technique and residency education, including the development of teaching instruments. As residency program director, he collaborates with faculty members and colleagues at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and with Houston Methodist Hospital to promote leading-edge surgical education to residents at UTHealth. He has been recognized with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from McGovern Medical School numerous times, including in 2021.

Dr. Yao is committed to delivering leading-edge medical and surgical management for chronic rhinosinusitis, paranasal sinus diseases, as well as advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, revision sinus surgery, and skull base and orbital surgery.
