Both have completed their residency training in comprehensive otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the medical school. Dr. Ahmad leaves the department to begin fellowship training in neurotology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and Dr. Asi will go on to Emory University in Atlanta as a laryngology fellow.

“Both physicians have been exemplary residents during their five years with us,” says William C. Yao, MD, program director of the otorhinolaryngology residency and an associate professor in the department. “This is a capstone award, the culmination of their years of hard work and dedication.”

In addition, Brian Cameron, MD, has been selected by his peers as Resident Teacher of the Year. Dr. Cameron is a chief resident for the academic year 2024-25 and will begin fellowship training in rhinology at Vanderbilt University after completing his final year in the department.

“Good teaching skills are key to being a good physician,” Dr. Yao says. “Dr. Cameron excelled at engaging his peers and teaching them to be good physicians while serving as a role model, spending extra time creating helpful lectures as well as coaching.”

The McGovern Medical School Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Training Program provides experience in the subspecialties of bronchoesophagology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, laryngology, maxillofacial trauma, otology and neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, and rhinology as well as audiology and speech pathology. Over the course of their five years at the institution, residents have opportunities for both formal and informal educational experiences, with a graduated increase in responsibility for education and patient care in line with their demonstrated clinical skills.
