Otorhinolaryngology Team Welcomes a New Class of Residents
Members of the Otolaryngology Residency Class of 2031 will begin their five years of training this summer with the ENT team at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. The department’s new residents, who matched through the National Resident Matching Program®, are Jay Trivedi, MD, a native of Fort Worth, and a graduate of Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia; Oscar Espinoza Villarreal, MD, from San Juan del Río in the state of Querétaro, Mexico, who graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee; and Daniel Xiao, MD, a Houston native and graduate of McGovern Medical School.
“We’re very pleased with this year’s match, which we consider highly successful and a testament to the reputation of our department and UTHealth Houston,” says William Yao, MD, chief of rhinology, associate professor, and director of the Otolaryngology Residency Program. “All three are gifted medical students in various aspects, and we look forward to working with these doctors from around the country as they train to become leaders in our field. This year we’re especially pleased that our graduating medical students who applied to otolaryngology residency programs matched at great institutions.”
In his spare time, Dr. Trivedi enjoys traveling; playing tennis, pickleball, and golf; cooking and building his own collection of recipes; and watching Formula 1 races. An accomplished preprofessional tennis player, he chose medicine over sports and got to know the ENT team through a rotation in the department last summer.
Dr. Espinoza Villarreal is a first-generation immigrant who gained English fluency at the age of 16. A concert enthusiast and dog lover, he’s a self-taught guitarist who formed a rock band as a teen and is passionate about soccer, traveling, geography, cultures, and languages. He stays active through hiking and sports.
Dr. Xiao, who became acquainted with the ENT team with as a medical student at UTHealth Houston, is an endurance runner in training for the Vancouver Half Marathon and enjoys creating healthy versions of popular meals. He also plays tennis and enjoys rowing, kayaking, cycling, backpacking, and pier fishing. Do-it-yourself home improvement projects and sea glass hunting are also passions.
The McGovern Medical School Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Training Program provides experience in the subspecialties of bronchoesophagology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, laryngology, maxillofacial trauma, otology and neuro-otology, pediatric otolaryngology, and rhinology as well as audiology and speech pathology. Over the course of their five years at the institution, residents have opportunities for both formal and informal educational experiences, with a graduated increase in responsibility for education and patient care in line with their demonstrated clinical skills.
The new residents will have clinical rotations at the department’s state-of-the-art outpatient office at Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza, local surgery centers, and major hospitals including Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, a quaternary referral center and Level 1 trauma center; Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, part of the Harris Health System; The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and Houston Methodist Hospital.
