RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is the primary educational site for Inpatient Pediatrics for the McGovern Medical School residency programs. Our faculty are the primary educators on the General Inpatient Pediatrics rotations for residents in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, Child Neurology, Medical Genetics/Pediatrics, and Family Medicine. Residents are essential team members in the care of our patients, giving them an outstanding foundation when caring for acutely ill children. Our training is committed to teach all six ACGME Core Competencies of outstanding Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and System-based Practice.
We provide care to acutely ill children with a wide variety of clinical disease processes, allowing our trainees to have a broad knowledge of pediatric conditions. Many of our patients are extremely complex with multiple medical problems, and we work in concert with our pediatric subspecialists to provide comprehensive care to these patients. The residents have a broad exposure to patients with medical and surgical diseases and complete the rotation with excellent fundamental skills in inpatient care.
Our nursing and ancillary staff at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital are committed to our trainees, providing a friendly and collegial professional culture in which to train. We have regular multi-disciplinary conferences and meetings regarding patient care, and our trainees are an absolutely essential part of our multi-disciplinary team.
Our faculty are excellent teachers at the bedside and the classroom. We are committed to innovative educational opportunities and have created a new inpatient teaching curriculum for our residents, focusing on the most common problems encountered in inpatient pediatrics. Our faculty have also created a curriculum focusing on clinical documentation improvement which has been well received by the resident’s and the faculty and presented at scholarly meetings. We provide teaching and supervision in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are immediately available to our trainees and patients. We are dedicated to providing mentorship to our trainees and are intensely invested in their success. Many of our trainees work with the PHM faculty on scholarly projects and have published their work and presented at national meetings. Our PHM faculty is also composed of many of our former residents, as we are confident that those receiving their pediatrics training at CMHH/UTHealth are outstanding clinicians and educators who are committed to lifelong learning and discovery.
