Clinical Safety & Effectiveness Course
Our Clinical Safety and Effectiveness course began in 2005 and has been implemented across four of the six health campuses in the University of Texas health system. This course is targeted for front-line professionals who work in Hospitals and office practices with the aim to improve the quality of care by applying quality improvement (QI) tools and methodologies.
The Clinical Safety and Effectiveness course curriculum focuses on quality concepts and evidence-based medicine, including variation, guideline development, history of quality management, health services research, data management, quality tools, teamwork, health policy and economics, project management, and return on investment. A key factor of this course is our effect to align the classes’ quality improvement projects with the strategic goals of each organization. Thus, students are nominated by their supervisor or organizational leaders, and then selected by a committee. Participants are closely supervised by course leaders and must create high-quality aim statements, utilize performance improvement tools, and have explicit, measurable outcomes.
The Clinical Safety and Effectiveness course is a significant time investment for all students enrolled and are honored upon graduation and presentation of course work. UTHealth Houston Pediatrics Department has had 19 faculty members who graduated from the Clinical Safety and Effectiveness course. These 19 faculty members lead Quality and Patient Safety efforts among their peers, medical students, residents, and staff.
