Call Schedule
Internship Year
During the first year of residency, call schedule will be determined by the McGovern Medical School Internal Medicine residency program.
PGY-2 through PGY-4 Years
TIRR Memorial Hermann
While rotating at TIRR Memorial Hermann for inpatient rehabilitation (6 months total), each resident will take home call approximately once a week. Following this call, residents will return to duty the next morning to complete transition of patient care to their primary attending preceptor, and are then excused for the second half of the day from further clinical duty. Residents will not be on call if it interferes with their participation in didactics.
Memorial Hermann – TMC
During any other rotation, residents take call for our 16 bed, in-hospital inpatient rehabilitation unit at Memorial Hermann – TMC. Call is taken in weekday (Monday-Thursday) or weekend (Friday-Sunday) blocks. Home call frequency varies across PGY years, where junior residents take more frequent call than senior residents. Commonly, PGY-2s take 1-2 call blocks per month, while PGY-4s take as little as 4-5 call blocks per year. Home call residents round on patients with their faculty preceptor on Saturdays and Sundays.
Internal Moonlighting
Internal moonlighting opportunities are available for PGY-2 through PGY-4 residents, helping with inpatient admissions to TIRR Memorial Hermann. External moonlighting (moonlighting at a clinical site or scope outside of the residency training program) is not permitted. Note: J-1 visa holders are not eligible for this internal moonlighting opportunity.
