Curriculum

Our didactics prepare graduates for all aspects of clinical practice. Didactics are held every Thursday morning, with breakfast served, nearby parking, and are protected from clinical duty. Lecturers include PM&R faculty from the Texas Medical Center, our PM&R residents, other rehabilitation clinicians, and nationally renowned speakers. The lecture cycle repeats every 18 months.

The curriculum includes lectures on:

  • Introduction to PM&R and PM&R Emergencies
  • Limb Loss Rehabilitation, Prosthetics & Orthotics, and Gait Analysis
  • Brain Injury and Stroke Rehabilitation
  • Spinal Cord Injury Medicine
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation
  • Musculoskeletal and Pain Medicine
  • Burn Rehabilitation
  • Neuromuscular Conditions and Electrodiagnosis
  • Health Care Disparities in Rehabilitation
  • Financial Preparedness and Professional Development

In-person, hands-on workshops occur yearly:

  • Neurologic physical examination
  • Musculoskeletal physical examination
  • Spasticity management: Intrathecal baclofen pump refills, phenol and botulinum toxin injections
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound-Guided and Fluoroscopic-Guided Injections
  • Prosthetics and Orthotics
  • Virtual Reality Botulinum Toxin Injection training course for PGY-2s
  • Cadaver-based Anatomy Course

Our Quality Improvement curriculum led by certified faculty where residents learn principles such as Six Sigma, Lean practices, process maps, PDSA cycles, Root Cause analysis, and complete yearly quality improvement group projects.

Other special lecture series include weekly lectures at TIRR Memorial Hermann on Monday afternoon and Monthly department Grand Rounds. Recent Grand Rounds topics can be seen below.
