Brandi Karnes, MD
- Assistant Professor, Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Brandi Karnes is a first-generation college student who attended McGovern Medical School for undergraduate medical education and psychiatry residency. During training, she found a strong interest in academic psychiatry particularly surrounding trainee education and curricular development. These interests earned her two departmental education awards and the national AADPRT George Ginsberg Fellowship Award. Karnes has particular enthusiasm for provider well-being and diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. During her time as a chief resident she was appointed to the House Staff Senate as the Diversity and Inclusion representative. She is a founding member of the psychiatry department’s wellness committee and of the UTHealth Science Center at Houston system-wide DEI Council.
Karnes chose to pursue a career in adult inpatient psychiatry at The Harris County Psychiatric Center to focus on providing quality care to underrepresented individuals and those with low socioeconomic status while working in a teaching faculty position. She is especially attentive to learning and delivering psychotherapeutic and updated psychopharmacological interventions to those experiencing psychotic symptoms and catatonia.
