Biography

Luis A. Fernandez, MD, joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 2016 as an assistant professor. Originally from Mexico City, he moved to the United States to pursue his medical education at The Medical University of South Carolina. Passionate about the biological modalities of treatment, Fernandez later developed and led an ECT service in Greenville, South Carolina. With encouragement from mentors and peers, he moved to Houston to work at a private psychiatric hospital. His commitment to caring for the underserved led him to join the clinical team at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, where he serves as chief of Psychiatry Services.
