Biography

Peggy Stephens, MD joined UTHealth in 2019 and currently serves as Associate Professor in Psychiatry at McGovern Medical School and in the Telepsychiatry Program. Dr. Stephens is a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is Board Certified three areas including Adult, Geriatric, and Addiction Psychiatry.

Prior to coming the UTHealth, Dr. Stephens served 14 years as the Chief Executive Officer, Superintendent, and Medical Director of Indiana’s Madison State Hospital. Her hospital was a perennial Joint Commission Top Performer and served as a pilot hospital for the development of the psychiatric Core Measures. Dr. Stephens drafted Indiana’s first prescribing guidelines. Her guidelines have been legislated into Indiana Statute to help insure psychiatric care is both evidence based and cost effective. Mental Health America of Indiana, awarded her the 2008 Individual Psychiatrist “Heroes in the Fight Award”. While in private practice, Dr. Stephens received her hospital corporation’s national “Quality Hospital of the Year Award” in 2001.

Dr. Stephens received her medical degree and completed her residency training at the University of Kentucky, during which time she was an American Psychiatric Association Fellow. She completed fellowship training as the first McLean Hospital/Harvard Addiction Psychiatry Fellow. Past leadership roles have included President of the Kentucky Medical Psychiatric Association, a Joint Commission Surveyor, an APA Committee on Women member, a 10 year member of the APA’s Council on Addictions that advocated for development of Addiction Fellowships and ABPN Certification, and a Board Member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
