Greater Houston Area Pediatric Bipolar Registry
This project is designed to learn more about how bipolar disorder affects children over time. We are especially interested in kids who have bipolar disorder or whose parents have it.
We believe that children with bipolar disorder—or those who may be at risk—might show certain patterns in their brain and behavior. Studying these patterns can help researchers better understand how bipolar disorder works.
This is a data registry, which means we collect information to study changes over time.
Here’s what participation involves:
- We’ll talk with both parents and children.
- You’ll fill out some questionnaires, including ones your child can complete on their own.
- Participation is voluntary and won’t affect your child’s medical care.
- Sometimes, we may find helpful information that could support your child’s health.
If you and your child decide to join GHABPR:
- First visit (Virtual): You’ll meet with the study coordinator virtually. They will explain the study and help you complete the consent form. This session may take up to 4 hours and needs at least one parent present.
- Second visit (In-person): Your child will take part in tests that look at thinking and memory skills.
- Third visit (In-person): Your child will have a blood draw and saliva collection
- Fourth visit (Optional): MRI Scan
Each child enrolled in the GHABPR study may receive compensation for their time.
If your child and family qualify, we’ll invite you to come back once a year until your child turns 25 years old.

Participation includes:
1. A virtual visit with the study coordinator (up to 4 hours, with a parent present)
2. In-person cognitive assessment
3. Sample collection (blood and saliva) (optional)

Participation is completely voluntary and will not impact your child’s medical care in any way.
Yes, each child enrolled in the study may receive compensation of up to $125 for their time.
As a data registry, GHABPR collects and stores information securely to study changes over time. All data is handled confidentially and in accordance with research ethics and privacy standards.
