Thosani appointed ASGE Committee chair
Nirav Thosani, MD, professor in the Department of Surgery and chief of the Center for Interventional Gastroenterology (iGUT), has been elected as the new chair of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Standards of Practice Committee.
“ASGE guidelines are considered as the ‘gold standard’ in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy,” Thosani said. “These guidelines are followed worldwide and have a significant impact on patient care as well as the education of future generations of gastroenterologists. It is a great honor to be selected for the chair position for the guideline committee.”
Thosani’s 3-year term began May 9 at the conclusion of Digest Disease Week, a yearly event held to help attendees grow as professionals and discover the latest research and learn about advances in clinical practice pertaining to digestive diseases.
As the chair, Thosani will oversee the development of evidence-based guidelines for endoscopy in managing digestive diseases, the establishment of policies and recommendations for ASGE’s relations with other medical and governmental organizations. Thosani will also head the review and revision of ASGE guidelines and position statements for endoscopy, exploring new strategies for disseminating guideline documents and fostering communication with other ASGE committees on mutual interests.
Thosani earned his medical degree in 2004 from N.H.L Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, India. He completed his residency in internal medicine (2010) and a fellowship in gastroenterology (2013) at McGovern Medical School before completing an advanced fellowship in therapeutic endoscopy at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Thosani is an active member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Standards of Practice Committee and has been involved in drafting multiple guidelines in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has been voted Top Doctors in Houston by Houstonia Magazine as well as Top Doctors in Texas by Texas Monthly Magazine.
