The American College of Emergency Physicians awarded Salil Bhandari, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, as the Rookie Speaker of the Year at the ACEP 2023 Scientific Assembly in Philadelphia.

The award is given to one emergency medicine physician throughout the United States each year to honor the physician with the highest performance as a speaker at the previous year’s Scientific Assembly. The ACEP Scientific Assembly is the largest emergency medicine conference in the world and is attended by thousands of emergency medicine physicians from around the world each year.

Bhandari’s presentations included talks on myth busting electrolyte emergencies, cardiac arrest treatment, and approaches to educational philosophy after graduating residency.

“I feel honored to have received such a wonderful award and feel my success is only due to so many mentors who have inspired and taught me along the way,” Bhandari said. “I also hope to encourage other physicians to use their platforms as speakers to not simply transmit information but inspire action by incorporating the art of storytelling in your presentations. When you engage learners in such a manner, they will always remain engaged.”

Bhandari serves as the director of Faculty Development for the Department of Emergency Medicine and teaches public speaking and presentation design to both faculty and residents in the Department. He also teaches emergency procedures for NASA’s recent graduate of the Astronaut Program in preparation for dealing with emergencies at the International Space Station.

Bhandari received his medical degree from Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and completed an emergency medicine residency at NYU Langone Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital Center. He was named the Clinical Attending of the Year by residents of the NYU Department of Emergency Medicine in 2015 and best faculty lecturer at McGovern Medical School in 2019.
