Akkanti named assistant dean, Clinical Education

LaTanya Love, MD, dean of Education, has named Bindu Akkanti, MD, as assistant dean for Clinical Education, effective September 1, 2025.

Akkanti, the Graham Endowed Professor in Pulmonary Medicine and professor in the Department of Internal Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in pulmonary and critical care medicine. She is the co-founder and co-director of the Women’s Vascular and Cardiac Interdisciplinary Center and the medical director of the Heart Failure ICU at the UTHealth Houston Heart and Vascular Institute.

Akkanti brings a distinguished record of educational innovation to the role of assistant dean for Clinical Education. She currently co-directs the Pulmonary Modules and the Transitions to Residency Courses and has been a McGovern Society Leader since 2016. Additionally, Akkanti founded a premed academy that has produced 38 regional and national conference presentations in the past year.

Akkanti holds additional leadership positions as the co-admin for the Houston Women Physicians Group and as an officer of the South Asian Women Physicians of North America. She earned both the CHEST Distinguished Educator Award and the Excellence in Clinical Science Award by the McGovern Medical School Women Faculty Forum in 2024.

Akkanti received her medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 2004. She followed that with an internal medicine internship at Baylor College of Medicine in 2004-05 before completing her internal medicine residency at Boston University Medical Center in 2008. Akkanti returned to Baylor College of Medicine for a pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship, which she completed in 2011 and joined the McGovern Medical School faculty in 2019.
