Dean’s Lecture scheduled for Dec. 4

The Office of Research Affairs will welcome Charles Cox, MD, to present the 2025 Dean’s Lecture at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4 in MSB 3.001.
Cox is the George and Cynthia Mitchell Distinguished Chair in Neurosciences; the Glassell Family Distinguished Chair; the James H. “Red” Duke, Jr., MD, Distinguished Professor in Surgery; and director of the Pediatric Surgical Translational Laboratories and Pediatric Program in Regenerative Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He also directs the Pediatric Trauma Program at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Through the Pediatric Translational Laboratories and Pediatric Trauma Program, Cox works to address problems that originate with traumatic injury, as well as the consequences of resuscitation and critical care. The program focuses on progenitor cell-based therapy for traumatic brain injury and related neurological injuries. It also develops novel biohybrid organs using cell-based and tissue engineering approaches to trauma- and injury-related problems.
A Texas native, Cox received his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed his surgery residency at McGovern Medical School in 1994, followed by a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan in 1996, and returned for a surgical critical care fellowship at McGovern Medical School in 1997.
The Dean’s Lecture Series at McGovern Medical School was established in 1983 to promote and encourage professional development and spark collaborative interest. Sponsored by the Research Committee, the series invites eminent scientists across various disciplines each year to present their work. Lecture topics range from basic science research to patient care.
