Reflecting on progress, looking forward to what’s next

As we close out the academic year, I continue to be inspired by the talent, compassion, and sense of community that define McGovern Medical School. This has been a season marked not only by individual achievement, but also by meaningful progress across our institution—from celebrating the achievement of our graduating students and advancing our mission areas to creating new opportunities for connection and wellness across our campus.
As we look ahead to the summer months, I am proud of all that we have accomplished together and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
Celebrating the Class of 2026
Commencement was a proud and memorable day for our McGovern Medical School community. We were all inspired by the commencement address by our very own Rex Marco, MD.
It was also an honor to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates and recognize a remarkable 100% residency match rate for the Class of 2026. This achievement reflects the exceptional dedication of our students, the strength of our educational programs, and the unwavering commitment of the faculty and staff who support them throughout their journey.
As our graduates begin residency programs across the country, I know they will carry forward the values of McGovern Medical School and continue to make a meaningful impact on the patients and communities they serve.
McGovern Recharge
In addition to staying engaged with our community, it is important to prioritize personal well-being. I have been encouraged by the positive response to the launch of McGovern Recharge, a new initiative that highlights the many ways our faculty, staff, and students take time to reset and reconnect outside of their professional and academic responsibilities.
Whether through travel, hobbies, family time, exercise, volunteerism, or quiet moments of reflection, these photos remind us of the importance of caring for ourselves so we can continue caring for others and be recharged when we are at work. I encourage you to explore the gallery and consider sharing your own McGovern Recharge moment (external link) with our community.
Supporting the Henry Strobel Retreat
Community and connection are also at the heart of one of our most cherished traditions. The Henry Strobel Retreat remains one of McGovern Medical School’s most meaningful events, because it captures so much of what makes our community special.
This year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the retreat, it feels especially meaningful to reflect on its lasting impact on generations of students.
Before classes even begin, incoming students have the opportunity to build relationships, connect with faculty mentors, and experience the sense of community that will support them throughout medical school and beyond. The retreat serves as an early reminder that success in medicine is built not only on academic excellence, but also on collaboration, mentorship, and human connection.
I’m deeply grateful to the alumni and supporters helping preserve this experience through the Henry W. Strobel, PhD, Freshman Retreat Fund (external link) so future generations of students can continue creating those same lifelong memories and connections.
Looking ahead
As we move into the summer months, I hope each of you finds time to rest, recharge, and spend meaningful time with family, friends, and colleagues.
Thank you for the dedication, compassion, and excellence you bring to our mission every day. It is your commitment to education, research, and patient care that continues to strengthen McGovern Medical School and shape the future of medicine.
I look forward to welcoming new residents and medical students to our community and beginning another exciting academic year together.
