Campbell named chief operating officer of UT Physicians

I am pleased to welcome Duncan Campbell, MBA, as chief operating officer of UT Physicians, effective Nov. 2. Duncan was selected following a comprehensive national search and brings extensive experience leading complex academic healthcare and physician organizations.

As the clinical practice of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, UT Physicians is central to our mission and to the care we provide to patients throughout our community. In this role, Duncan will serve as the business and operational leader of UT Physicians, working closely with our physician leaders, department chairs, and administrative teams to strengthen operations across the practice while supporting an exceptional experience for our patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals and employees.

Duncan brings more than 25 years of experience in healthcare operations and academic medicine, with extensive leadership across physician enterprises, ambulatory operations, financial management, strategic growth, and payer strategy. He joins us from UC San Diego Health, where he has served in senior leadership roles since 2010, most recently as chief operating officer for physician network and strategic development. In that role, he helped guide the growth and integration of a physician network of more than 3,100 physicians and led initiatives spanning operations, strategic partnerships, value-based care, and organizational transformation.

Before joining UC San Diego Health, he held leadership roles in both healthcare and academic medicine here in Texas. He served as managing director of Texas Tech Physicians, where he oversaw the School of Medicine faculty practice plan, and as vice president of clinic financial services for Baylor Scott & White Health (formerly Scott & White Healthcare). He earned his bachelor of business administration, with majors in finance and economics, and his master of business administration, with a concentration in health organization management, from Texas Tech University.

Duncan joins UT Physicians at a pivotal time as we work to strengthen and position our clinical practice for long-term success. Through UTHealth Houston’s Future in Focus strategic planning process and the Operational Excellence Transformation Initiative, we are reinforcing our foundation to support growth, innovation, and excellence in patient care. His experience and leadership will be instrumental as we build on this momentum and advance our clinical mission.

I also want to express my sincere appreciation to Cynthia Huehlefeld for her leadership and service as interim chief operating officer. Her steady leadership and commitment to UT Physicians have been invaluable during this transition.

Please join me in thanking Cynthia for her leadership and in welcoming Duncan to UT Physicians and the McGovern Medical School community. I look forward to building on our progress and shaping the next chapter for UT Physicians.
