Primary Care Track


Mission Statement

The Primary Care Track aims to develop innovative, compassionate, and community-minded primary care physicians who lead in preventive care, chronic disease management, and health equity.

This track integrates Lifestyle and Culinary Medicine, Population Health, and Health Systems Science into residency training — preparing graduates to serve as leaders in ambulatory care and academic ambulatory medicine. Our goals are to strengthen continuity of care experience and panel management; emphasize chronic disease prevention, health maintenance, and apply principles of lifestyle medicine and behavior change counseling; Demonstrate excellence in patient-centered, evidence-based ambulatory care; Understand the impact of social determinants of health on clinical outcomes and population management; Engage in continuous quality improvement and systems-based practice; Serve as educators and advocates for primary care and health equity.

Program Highlights

  • Residents participate in continuity clinic and an extra half day of didactic sessions tailored to outpatient and community medicine, along with an extra 2-week clinic elective in their PGY2 or PGY3 year
  • During the PGY3 year, residents will get 1 systole block to work at a community outpatient clinic
  • They will undergo a longitudinal scholarly project related to outpatient/ambulatory medicine

Summary of Curriculum Requirements [PGY-2/ PGY-3]

Clinical:

  • Work at OC LBJ Medicine Continuity Clinic
  • Attend a 1 OC clinic admin meeting
  • EXTRA elective of subspeciality experiences (PGY2 or PGY3)
  • 1 systole block of primary care (PGY3)

 Educational:

  • Half-day didactic series during the ambulatory block
  • Lead ‘Teaching Tuesdays’ lecture
  • Lead one Journal club

 Population health/scholarly:

  • Participate in Harris Health culinary medicine classes after receiving training
  • Work on scholarly project
  • Attend and organize health fairs

How to Apply

  • Open for PGY 1 or PGY2 Categorical Internal Medicine Residents
  • Applicants should have a strong interest in pursuing careers in Primary Care or Outpatient-based medicine
