Portrait of Connie Gaskamp“I spent the majority of my career working at Ben Taub Hospital, working 10 years in Pediatrics and almost 20 years in various nurseries, including Transitional Care Nursery, Newborn Nursery, and Level II Nursery.  I worked in variety of roles, including staff Registered Nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, and Nurse Manager, and Nurse Coordinator.   While working in the nurseries, I realized that I really enjoyed helping mothers and babies with breastfeeding.  I was mentored in lactation by Dr. Judy Hopkinson from the Children’s Research Center, and in 2002, I became the first board-certified lactation consultant at Ben Taub Hospital.  Afterwards, I helped to start Ben Taub’s Newborn Follow-Up and Breastfeeding Clinics.

My last eight years at Ben Taub, I worked exclusively with Lactation.  I was involved in training nursing staff, medical students, and nursing students regarding breastfeeding.  Ben Taub Hospital became a Baby Friendly Hospital in 2015, and in December 2018, I retired from Harris Health after more than 38 years as a Ben Taub employee.

I began working at the Lactation Foundation in January 2019, and it has been such an amazing experience.  I enjoy helping the mothers and babies with breastfeeding, and I work with a wonderful team of lactation consultants and staff.   It has been a special opportunity and very rewarding to assist mothers and babies at this time in their lives, in their breastfeeding journey.”

Connie enjoys traveling and spending time in her home town of Brenham, Texas.  She is active in her church, has two cats, and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
