The blue book elective series Health Systems and Safety Net Care was organized by second-year medical student Calvin Wong and advised by Jane Hamilton, PhD, MPH, LCSW, associate professor in the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

The key objectives of the series included improving students’ understanding of and skills needed to address the medical, behavioral, and social needs of indigent patients. After participating in educational sessions about safety net care, vulnerable populations, and skill-building, medical students visited Temenos Permanent Supportive Housing for fieldwork and a luncheon.

The lunch was sponsored by UTHealth Houston’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which aims to enhance students’ knowledge about how healthcare policy affects the health professions. The QEP is entitled “Healthcare Policy for Health Professionals” and engages students of the university’s six professional schools.
