What inspired you to want to pursue a career in medicine?
My inspiration to pursue a career in medicine stems from personal experiences. Growing up, I witnessed the profound effects of illness through my mother’s struggle following a serious medical condition. This experience ignited my curiosity about medical science and fueled my desire to understand and address complex conditions. My involvement in research and volunteering solidified my commitment to medicine, revealing the vital role of compassionate, attentive care. I had the privilege of growing up around healthcare workers who were always so kind and supportive, ensuring my family felt cared for. Observing the impact of empathetic, patient centered treatment on patients and families, I am driven to become a physician who not only provides medical expertise but also listens and supports patients in navigating their health journeys.

Why did you choose McGovern Medical School?
I chose McGovern Medical School because of its outstanding location within one of the largest medical centers in the world and its affiliation with TIRR Memorial Hermann, a leading rehabilitation hospital. During the application process, I was struck by the warm and welcoming community at McGovern, which made me feel right at home. I also value the collaborative environment that the school fosters, as it aligns with my aspirations for both professional and personal growth in medicine.

What motivates you?
During my last semester of undergrad, I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to intern in Washington, DC through the Archer Fellowship Program. Working in a congressional office allowed me to see the dedicated efforts behind the scenes aimed at driving meaningful change. The most profound part of this experience was hearing from numerous advocacy groups about the specific barriers to healthcare access and the crucial policy changes required to address them. Knowing that there are many people that are facing unjust systemic barriers to accessing quality healthcare motivates me to continue pursuing a career in medicine and to be the provider that acknowledges these barriers and works towards changing them.

Who is your hero?
My heroes are my parents, who have profoundly shaped my values and aspirations. Their resilience, compassion, and dedication to their work have been a constant source of inspiration. They exemplify what it means to live a life of service and commitment, whether through their professional achievements or their personal sacrifices. The example they set in navigating life’s challenges with grace and integrity motivates me to strive for excellence in my own endeavors and to carry forward their legacy of empathy and perseverance.

What is your ultimate goal for your career in medicine?
My ultimate goal in medicine is to be remembered for the high-quality, compassionate care I provide and the meaningful relationships built with patients and their families. There is so much healthcare providers can do to both positively and negatively impact a patient’s life and I hope to never forget how much of a privilege it is to get to take care of others. From my experience working as a medical assistant, I witnessed how financial barriers and lack of social support often hindered patient care. I also hope to address systemic issues that affect patient care and work towards advocating for better policies that alleviate these challenges.

What kind of emotions do you feel as you’re beginning medical school?
Being the daughter of alumni, it means so much to carry on the legacy as well as establish my own at McGovern Medical School. After the passing of my mother, the opportunity to walk to the same halls of the medical school that she did is like getting to know her more intimately in a way I will cherish forever. I have the same nervous excitement many of my classmates share, but I also feel a sense of pride to be joining a community of doctors that I have looked up to and admire most all my life.

What are you looking forward to most about medical school?
I am looking forward to getting to meet all of the amazing people in our medical school class. I am very excited for the hands-on Anatomy class this semester, but also to build upon my foundational science knowledge. To be working closely with mentors and peers, and be part of a community dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and patient care, is truly inspiring.

If you had to pick a medical specialty right now, what would it be and why?
If I were to choose a medical specialty, I would choose Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) due to its emphasis on long-term patient relationships and comprehensive care. The focus on improving a patient’s quality of life is something I value. I am particularly interested in brain injury management, as it presents complex challenges and opportunities for innovative approaches to rehabilitation. PM&R’s integration of physical and social aspects aligns with my commitment to patient-centered care. At the same time, I am very excited to be able to explore many different specialties throughout my time in medical school.
