Isaac Schmale, MD, has completed a fellowship in neurorhinology and advanced endoscopic sinus surgery at the Texas Sinus Institute in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. After fellowship, he joined the faculty at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York, at the beginning of the 2020 academic year.

A native of Santa Cruz, California, Dr. Schmale is a 2014 graduate of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He completed residency training at the University of Rochester in 2019, during which he matched to the fellowship program at McGovern Medical School.

As a fellow, Dr. Schmale worked closely in clinic and the operating room with the department’s three attending rhinologists: Martin J. Citardi, MD, professor and chair of the department; Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for research; and William C. Yao, MD, assistant professor, who together serve as co-directors of the UTHealth Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship. He spent equal time with all three rhinologists, with assignments prioritized for participation in their more complex revision and skull base cases.

“Dr. Schmale was a great team player and an integral part of the rhinology team as he worked with us in the operating room as well as on several research projects,” Dr. Yao says. “Having the opportunity to work with fellows like him is what makes training the next generation of physicians so rewarding.”
