February 2, 2021

Ibrahim "Trey" Alava, MDIbrahim “Trey” Alava III, MD, associate professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, was named by his peers among Super Doctors® in Texas for 2020. Super doctors are selected through a rigorous process that identifies physicians with high peer recognition and outstanding professional achievement. Dr. Alava is chief of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, which is home to Texas’ busiest Level III Trauma Center.

Dr. Alava also serves as medical director of the 32 specialty clinics at LBJ Hospital and helps physicians and staff develop innovative strategies for care. In close collaboration with general surgeons, oral surgeons, ophthalmologists, pulmonologists, and plastic surgeons, he has worked to build an ideal model for caring for patients at a safety net hospital, with patients who come in through the emergency department seen in clinic within hours or the following day. He also has developed subspecialty otolaryngology care for rhinology, head and neck surgery, laryngology, and otology at LBJ Hospital.

Dr. Alava was named Faculty Member of the Year in 2016 by otorhinolaryngology residents and a Texas Monthly Super Doctor Rising Star in 2016, 2017, and 2018. He has been named a Top Doctor by Houstonia magazine twice and was recognized with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award at McGovern Medical School in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
