Dr. William Yao Named a Castle Connolly Rising Star
Rhinologist William C. Yao, MD, co-director of the UTHealth Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, has been named among 2021 Castle Connolly Rising Stars. The awardees are recognized throughout the year based on peer nominations and acknowledgement of outstanding accomplishment and dedication to the field of medicine. Rising Stars are early career doctors who are emerging leaders in the medical community, contributing to advances in medicine through clinical care, research, community service, education, and leadership. Dr. Yao is an associate professor and director of the otorhinolaryngology residency program.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Yao received his medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2008. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine, where he was recognized with the 2014 Resident Teaching Award. He subsequently completed a fellowship in rhinology and anterior skull base surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School.
Fluent in English and Japanese, Dr. Yao has a strong interest in surgical technique and residency education, including the development of teaching instruments. As residency program director, he collaborates with faculty members and colleagues at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and with Houston Methodist Hospital to promote leading-edge surgical education to residents at UTHealth. He has been recognized with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from McGovern Medical School numerous times, including in 2021.
Dr. Yao is committed to delivering leading-edge medical and surgical management for chronic rhinosinusitis and paranasal sinus diseases, and performs advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, revision sinus surgery, and skull base and orbital surgery.
