McGovern Medical School research retreat scheduled for March 3

Registration is open for the annual McGovern Medical School research retreat, where faculty, graduate students, and fellows can learn more about research conducted on campus and interact with their peers on March 3.

Sponsored by the Research Committee, the event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the Sarofim Research Building at The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Disease, 1825 Pressler St.

The event will include two breakthrough discovery symposia designed to showcase the talent of junior and senior faculty whose work is worthy of recognition for its innovation and significance. Additionally, there will be a poster competition sponsored by the Graduate Student Education Committee and a postdoctoral symposium designed to highlight the work of graduate and postgraduate trainees.

Kjetil Tasken, MD, PhD, head of the Institute of Cancer Research at Oslo University Hospital and director of the Oslo University Hospital Center for Precision Cancer Medicine, will deliver the keynote address and Ernst Knobil Distinguished Lecture on “Advancing precision cancer medicine by building national initiatives and via international collaboration.”

Presenters for the Breakthrough Discovery Symposia will be: Holger Eltzschig, MD, PhD; Valeria Vasquez, PhD; Xinzhu Yu, PhD; Van An Duong, PhD; Bibek GC, PhD; Evanta Kabir, PhD; Antonio Pagán, PhD; Fenfen Wang, PhD; Xiaoming Du, PhD; David Murdock, MD; and Jennifer Walker, PhD.

Eltzschig, Vasquez, Yu, and Walker are also faculty members of The University of Texas MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

The Graduate Student Education Committee Poster competition offers students a public forum to present their findings and receive valuable feedback on their research. Students also have the opportunity to see how their work compares to that of their peers in a competitive setting. Each year, awards are given for projects that demonstrate outstanding and innovative research that has the potential to contribute to the advancement of medical science and health care.
