LaTanya J. Love, MD, dean of McGovern Medical School and H. Wayne Hightower Distinguished Professor in the Medical Sciences, announced the appointments of Emma Ferguson, MD, and Mark T. Warner, MD, as assistant deans for Graduate Medical Education (GME) to further strengthen the school’s educational mission.

Dr. Emma Feguson
Emma Ferguson, MD

Ferguson is a distinguished radiologist and educator who currently serves as professor, director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program, and vice chair for Education in the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging. With nearly 20 years on faculty, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership in curriculum development, competency assessment, mentorship, and institutional accreditation. As leader of the GME Task Force for learner assessment, she has partnered closely with the GME Office to support program directors, enhance assessment processes, conduct Special Program Reviews, and guide departments through compliance and remediation efforts.

Dr. Mark Warner
Mark Warner, MD

Warner is a highly respected clinician educator and program leader who currently serves as associate professor and director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program — the largest program of its kind in Texas and the Southwest — in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. He brings more than a decade of progressive educational leadership, including service as the GME Task Force leader for Faculty Development and Scholarly Activity. He has organized institutional workshops focused on educator portfolios, effective feedback, and supporting the struggling learner. Nationally, he is recognized for his work with the American College of Chest Physicians, the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors, and for multiple presentations at Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Association for Hospital Medical Education annual meetings.

“Together, Drs. Ferguson and Warner share a deep commitment to graduate medical education, a strong record of institutional service, and a dedication to advancing educational quality across the clinical learning environment,” Love said. “Their combined expertise will be invaluable as we prepare for the upcoming ACGME site visit and continue strengthening the quality, innovation, and effectiveness of training programs.”

In their new roles, Ferguson and Warner will report to Pamela Promecene, MD, who serves as McGovern Medical School’s GME and ACGME Designated Institutional Official.

“I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Sam Luber, MD, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, who previously served in this role and continues to work tirelessly to advance graduate medical education,” Love said.
