Jayaraman honored as outstanding woman in science
The Association for Women in Science – Houston Chapter has named Vasanthi Jayaraman, PhD, professor and John S. Dunn Chair in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Bob and Hazel Casey Chair in Biochemistry, as the winner of its 2026 Outstanding Woman in Science Award.
Jayaraman was honored for her exceptional contributions to the field of structural biology and neuroscience. Her research focuses on understanding the structure and function of neurotransmitter receptors and how they influence communications between nerve cells. Jayaraman’s work has provided important insights into neurological contributions, including epilepsy and ischemia, and has been published in leading scientific journals.
“I am truly honored to receive this award from AWIS Houston,” Jayaraman said. “My success has been shaped by wonderful mentors, colleagues, students, and trainees who have been part of my journey. What makes this recognition particularly meaningful to me is that it celebrates the collective impact women can have in advancing science. I am grateful to AWIS Houston for recognizing that broader mission.”
In addition to her contributions to research, Jayaraman has made a lasting impact through her commitment to mentorship, education, and the development of the next generation of scientists.
“Vasanthi has been my mentor since I was an undergraduate, and I truly would not be where I am today without her,” said Kimberly Mankiewicz, PhD, scientific editor in the Center for Translational Injury Research at UTHealth Houston and Jayaraman’s nominator for the award. “She saw strengths in me that didn’t always fit the traditional mold of a scientist and encouraged me to pursue my passion for science communication. More than 20 years later, she is still my mentor and someone I know will always have my back. To me, that is what makes her truly an outstanding woman in science.”
The Association for Women in Science – Houston Chapter supports women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine in Texas’ Gulf Coast and the Houston region by providing opportunities to participate in professional networking, mentoring, and leadership activities.
