Training Sites
Texas Medical Center
The TMC environment provides exceptional training opportunities, with access to a large number of consultants representing virtually every subspecialty. These are subspecialists our residents will be able to consult with for years, even after they graduate. Faculty in the TMC are actively engaged in medical research, not only providing, but defining the latest information in their fields. Many daily or weekly lectures and conferences with material relevant to family physicians are offered throughout the TMC.
Located in the Texas Medical Center, this clinic has a large number of managed-care patients, including Medicaid and Medicare Managed Care. Many patients are employees of the various institutions in the TMC, referrals from the surrounding residential areas, managed care organizations or from the MHH Emergency Center. Residents are responsible for their own panel of patients with Family Medicine faculty always available for clinical consultation and supervision of procedures. Patient teams are composed of residents, faculty, Nurses and a referral coordinator. Access to the TMC Library, personal computers and an electronic medical record allows residents to utilize the latest reference materials.

Approximately 33% of the required rotations are at the 658-bed Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, also located in the TMC. Hermann is part of the eleven-hospital Memorial Hermann Healthcare System that heavily recruits our graduates. Patients from the Residency Program are admitted to the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Family Medicine Service and managed by their physician, whether faculty or resident. The majority of call during the third year is for this same Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center service. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is listed as one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States.

The Acres Homes Health Center was the first clinic in Harris Health to be utilized as a model Family Medicine Residency Clinic. Located nine miles north of Houston’s central business district, Acres Homes is one of the five Harris Health clinics staffed by the Department of Family Medicine faculty physicians. It is located in a federally designated Health Professional shortage area (HPSA) and provides care for primarily underserved, indigent or Medicaid patients. The multicultural patient population at Acres Homes is predominantly African-American with a significant Hispanic population and some Asian and European patients as well as a sizable geriatric population. Residents are responsible for their own panel of patients from this community with Family Medicine faculty available for clinical consultation. There is an up-to-date library that provides current reference materials as well as on-line computer search capabilities. This site also includes an in-house pharmacy and ancillary services for patients.
