TSICU
The Transplant Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a mixed medical-surgical 10-bed combined ICU-IMU that serves the surgical specialty patient population, with a specific emphasis on liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant patients. In addition, the TSICU manages bariatric, otorhinolaryngology, urology, and general surgical patients through a multidisciplinary team composed of an ICU attending, fellow, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, pharmacist, respiratory therapist and nutritionist. Medical and nurse practitioner students are also trained in this ICU during the year. Formal rounds are conducted daily in this closed ICU, with regular coordination of care occurring throughout the day with specialty services such as transplant surgery, hepatology, nephrology, and otorhinolaryngology. The ICU is led by a medical director and nurse manager who work together to focus on quality of care and service to this patient population.
Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital
We provided three important services to LBJ General Hospital (one of the two county hospital in the city). We are in charge of the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (16 beds), pulmonary consult services and pulmonary outpatient clinic. The MSICU is a multidisciplinary unit essential to the PCCM fellowship training. MSICU at LBJ is a closed unit where we manage not only MICU patients but also provided ICU consults for other services such as surgical, obstetric, orthopedic. plastic, ENT/ophthalmology and cardiology patients. This rotation allows the fellows to obtain proficiency in the ICU management of complicated patients and learn to work in a multidisciplinary medical team. The pulmonary service at LBJ Hospital is one of the most interesting and rewarding services. We have a very well equipped bronchoscopy suite with a highly trained bronchoscopy nurse and technician. We performed regular bronchoscopic procedures including EBUS and advanced interventional procedures. The LBJ outpatient pulmonary clinic is a busy clinic with a very large number of patients with diverse pulmonary pathology.
Kindred
We at UT Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine have an academic relationship with one of the largest LTAC (Long Term Acute Care) hospitals in the city of Houston. Kindred at the medical center has a diverse group of patients that in particular include patients with Lung transplant, heart transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) devices. Our fellows rotate through Kindred as a part of their educational experience and are available throughout the week to manage acute care problems that the patients may encounter while at the Kindred Hospital. The lung transplant experience that our fellows gain from this rotation helps them manage end stage pulmonary diseases in a more effective manner. In addition, we continue to follow all critically ill patients that are being discharged from Memorial Hermann Hospital at the medical center, this provides our patients, faculty and fellows with continuity of care. We are also available for Pulmonary consults at the Kindred Hospital. Our faculty and fellows are well versed in all aspects of pulmonary and Critical care medicine. If necessary our team is highly capable to place arterial lines, central lines, perform thoracentesis, flexible bronchoscopies and advanced bronchoscopic procedures.
MICU
The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center is a closed medical 16-bed critical care unit that serves the medical specialty patient population, with a specific emphasis on sepsis, respiratory disease, and disorders of internal medicine. The MICU rounding model consists of a multidisciplinary team composed of an ICU attending (or intensivist), a critical care fellow, a team of internal medicine residents, a nurse practitioner or physician assistant, ICU nursing including charge nurse, a critical care pharmacist, a respiratory therapist, and a nutritionist. Residents from a variety of disciplines will round on the MICU service, from family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, and surgery.
Medical and nurse practitioner students are present as well on rounds in the ICU during the year. Formal rounds are conducted daily in this closed ICU, with regular coordination of care occurring throughout the day with consultant services. The ICU is led by a medical director and nurse manager who work together to focus on quality of care and service to this patient population.
RICU
A collaborative and novel intensive care at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center, the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit / Ears Nose Throat ICU is affectionately known as the RICU. Staffed by an intensivist every day, this closed unit is led by the ICU attending and the critical care fellow. The patient population of the RICU is mainly upper respiratory disease including tracheostomy care, mechanical ventilation management, and postoperative ENT care.
CCU
Our Division of Critical Care sees cardiac patients daily in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center. This open unit is staffed by a primary cardiologist with our intensivists present as hands-on consultants with direct management of acute coronary syndrome patients, mechanical ventilation, cardiogenic shock, and elective and complicated postprocedural care of transaortic valve replacements (TAVRs). It is not uncommon to care for cardiac patients with mechanical circulatory support devices, including intra-aortic balloon pumps. Rounds consist of an intensivist and a critical care fellow, ICU nursing, and a critical care pharmacist.
CVICU
The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center is a high volume aortic, cardiac, and valve center. Our intensivists and critical care fellows round daily on all CVICU patients daily in a multidisciplinary approach, including the floor charge nurse, ICU nursing, the surgical advanced practice providers (APP), and in most months of the year, medical students and APP students. There is close patient care communication with the surgical team and consultant teams on these patients, which include postoperative open and endovascular aortic repairs of aneurysms and dissections, minimally invasive and open-approach cardiac valves, aortocoronary bypass and coronary artery bypass grafting, and congenital cardiac heart disease repair in the adult population, among other cardiac procedures. Postoperative huddles include ICU nursing, the anesthesia and cardiothoracic surgical teams, as well as our medical intensivists. Daily responsibilities include mechanical ventilator management, hemodynamic management, monitoring of respiratory and mobility process, and chest tube management.

Heart Failure ICU
Our intensivists provide daily consult services to the Advanced Heart Failure ICU at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Post-cardiac transplant care, ventricular-assist device (VAD) care, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) care, both veno-venous and veno-arterial (VV- and VA-) with advanced ventilator management are provided in this specialized unit. Daily rounds consists of a senior critical care fellow, intensivist and the Advanced Heart Failure team including AHF cardiology and cardiothoracic surgeons.
Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital
The latest addition to the Memorial Hermann Hospital family, Memorial Hermann Cypress has a combined 16-bed capacity ICU and IMU (intermediate medical unit). Serving the population of Cypress and Northwest Houston, the Cypress ICU is staffed by our intensivists daily with multidisciplinary rounds.

TIRR
Our pulmonary and critical care attendings round on consults at the nationally ranked Memorial Hermann TIRR (The Institute for Research & Rehabilitation) and provide advanced respiratory plans of care.
