Clinics for COPD

Clinics for COPD (Emphysema)

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also known as emphysema, is a common lung condition that can cause shortness of breath.  Also known as emphysema, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States.

COPD is a chronic respiratory disease that is considered progressive over time.  Although it is most commonly caused by smoking, it can also be due to exposure to a variety of toxic gases or to genetic abnormalities.

Mission of Clinics for COPD (Emphysema)

We break down our mission statement into four key focus areas: clinical care, community, education, and research.

Clinical Care:  To provide a compassionate, comprehensive, state of the art, and evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, also known as emphysema)

Community: To disseminate awareness and educate the public about the spectrum of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, also known as emphysema)

Education: To train future specialist physicians in the diagnosis and empathetic treatment of patient living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, also known as emphysema)

Research: To advance the science and contribute to the knowledge in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, also known as emphysema) through cooperative and multidisciplinary involvement in discovering novel ideas on the causes, mechanisms of disease development, and disease progression, all while exploring new avenues of treatment

As part of an academic tertiary referral center, our Clinic offers state of the art, evidence-based management of COPD or emphysema.  Current COPD options:

  • Confirmation of the COPD diagnosis
  • Genetic testing, if applicable
  • Medication selection according to national/international guidelines
  • Patient education on “how to use your inhaler”
  • Long term oxygen therapy, if applicable
  • Smoking cessation therapies/strategies
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation

Also, in collaboration with our colleagues at Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center (TMC), we offer advanced therapies for selected patients including lung volume reduction surgery and lung transplantation.

Our Clinic is also involved in cutting-edge research.  We are the only center in Houston to be involved in a large clinical trial involving Hemolung technology in advanced COPD patients.
