There is a new Women’s and Children’s Tower which houses a 36-bed labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum unit and intensive and basic nursery services and other pediatric services. There is an adjacent ward for gynecologic and postoperative patients. This hospital has an active Maternal Fetal Transfer service (> 200 per year) and is the tertiary helicopter transport center for the region. The daily census of antepartum (high risk) patients is usually 10–14. The center also has an active Antepartum Testing Unit that sees approximately 50–60 patients per week. Inpatient gynecology and day surgery units provide patient care for surgical and nonsurgical gynecology patients; there are two operating rooms dedicated to gynecologic surgery each day.
Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital is a busy public hospital that is operated by the Harris Health System, providing major medical services to the medically indigent population within the Harris County area. A level III nursery is available to provide care to the tiniest of newborns. The Perinatal Testing Center does 400 ultrasounds per month and the Ob/Gyn referral clinic sees >100 patients per day. Each year approximately 700 major gyn cases are performed by residents. There is a modern teaching facility with classrooms, computer lab, and high-tech auditorium adjacent to the hospital. UTHealth Ob/Gyn faculty members directly oversee all patient care and have offices within the hospital buildings. The hospital is undergoing a major expansion project with a new state-of-the-art emergency center opening in 2011. And, we know that one size health care does not fit all. Our care philosophy is Woman First. It’s in our name, and it’s in our founding mission. Our hospital was founded in 1976 by 29 physicians who recognized a need in Houston for a facility focused solely on women in all stages of life.
