Frequently Asked Questions: Low Vision Services

Q. I have been diagnosed with Low vision. What should I expect when I come to your clinic?
A. We provide comprehensive vision rehabilitation services. Our doctor will do a thorough functional low vision assessment that tells her what you are able and not able to do, introduce you to magnification options and other strategies, and recommend occupational therapy and or orientation mobility training as needed. We have an Occupational therapist on staff and Orientation Mobility Specialist on site.

Q. How long is the visit? Do I need a referral?
A. Our exams are fairly elaborate and typically last 1 ½ to 2 hours. We require a referral to ensure that your eyes’ medical needs are met by another physician. You can refer yourself, but must provide us with a copy of your latest eye exam (within the past 6 months) prior to your appointment. If your insurance requires a special referral, please let us know ahead of time.

Q. What do I need to bring to my visit?
A. Bring your latest eye glasses and any low vision devices that you use. We also encourage you to bring in examples of your favorite pastime activities that you are having trouble with (knitting, sewing, crossword, music sheets etc)

Q. What if my device is not covered and I cannot afford it?
A. We work closely with DARS (Dept for Assistive and Rehabilitative Services) to help you get funded. We also work with other local and national agencies to help you find resources.

Q. What if I am not sure of what devices I want to buy?
A. We have a wonderful loaner program with a full library of low vision devices (Courtesy Sightfirst Grant, Lions Club International Foundation) that can be checked out for a few weeks to help you decide. Ask our staff about it.
