Teaching Conferences

The Department of Pediatrics Fellows’ Core Curriculum Conference Series provides a structured curriculum for all fellows in the Department of Pediatrics and addresses topics including, but not limited to, research design, grant writing, presentation and teaching skills, quality improvement initiatives, principles of evidence-based medicine, professionalism, and an assortment of other topics.

The conferences are all within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and are offered on a weekly basis in the PICU. Fellows are also required to attend Pediatric Fellows Core Lecture Series every 2nd Tuesday of the month in McGovern Medical School.

Throughout the three-year curriculum, fellows participate in a broad variety of educational activities.

Simulation-based training
With emphasis in critical thinking, development of management plans and team-training are an essential part of the curriculum during the three years of fellowship in the state-of-the-art “Surgical and Clinical Skills Center” at McGovern Medical School.

Research Education
Participation in the Clinical Research Curriculum which is part of a a two-year introductory lecture series designed to promote clinical research expertise among clinical investigators.

Fellows are also expected to present their research at local, national, or international conferences and are given five days each year in order to participate in academic meetings.

Medical Teaching & Educational Requirements
Pediatric critical care medicine fellows also participate in teaching an Advanced Pediatric Life Support course, “mock codes,” and PICU nurses and respiratory therapists, and pediatric residents.

All fellows complete an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) certification course in their first year.

Fellows are expected to complete the AMA GME Competency Education Program Course Plan Residency and Fellowship Core Curriculum .
