Dr Alejandro “Alex” Garbino grew up in Uruguay and Switzerland. After undergraduate education in Physics at the University of Houston, he completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, with a PhD in Translational Biology and Molecular Medicine. He then completed a Residency in Emergency Medicine a Ben Taub General Hospital followed by Aerospace Medicine at the NASA/UTMB Aerospace Program. After working in Denver, Colorado, he returned to Houston to a full-time research position as an EVA Scientist at NASA Johnson Space Center and is an Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine in Houston, TX.
His work focuses on the human physical and cognitive challenges associated with working in extreme environments and space suits, including metabolic workloads, thermal stress, prevention of decompression illness and managing cognitive load.
He has also provided medical and research support for various extreme environments, including high altitude skydiving, Antarctic medical support and motorsports. Lastly, he is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medicine Association.
