Overview
The Medical Quality Section of our program is dedicated to improving patient safety, operational performance, and clinical excellence across our emergency departments. Through quality improvement initiatives, systems-based innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, our faculty work to strengthen the delivery of emergency care while fostering a culture of accountability, education, and continuous improvement
What We Do
Quality and patient safety are foundational to the practice of emergency medicine. The Medical Quality Section leads departmental efforts focused on improving clinical outcomes, optimizing workflows, and enhancing the safety and efficiency of care delivered across our clinical sites.

Faculty within the section oversee initiatives spanning quality improvement, peer review, patient safety, operations, and systems-based process improvement. These efforts support both frontline clinical care and long-term institutional goals centered on delivering high-value, evidence-based emergency medicine.
Quality Improvement & Systems Innovation
The section supports a wide range of quality improvement (QI) initiatives aimed at strengthening patient care and operational performance throughout the emergency department.

Education, Leadership & Professional Development
Medical quality education is integrated into the department’s academic mission, exposing residents and learners to the principles of patient safety, healthcare systems, and continuous quality improvement.

EM Quality Fellowship
The Emergency Medicine Quality Fellowship is a one-year advanced training program designed to develop physician leaders in healthcare quality, patient safety, and clinical operations.
Fellows gain hands-on experience in:
- Leading departmental and institutional QI initiatives
- Conducting root cause analyses and peer review
- Exploring healthcare operations, finance, and leadership
- Implementing systems-based solutions in emergency medicine
- Maintaining an active clinical practice within the emergency department
This multidisciplinary experience prepares fellows to lead quality and operational initiatives across a variety of healthcare settings.
