Congratulations to EM PGY3, Princess Emeana, DO, and Associate Professor and Co-Section Chief of Pediatric EM, Adeola Kosoko, MD, on their recent publication in the June 2025 issue of JACEP Open.
Their case report, titled “A Leaky Belly Button,” explores an unusual but clinically significant diagnosis: an infected urachal duct cyst in a pediatric patient.
The article details the case of a 9-year-old girl presenting with persistent purulent drainage from the umbilicus—a symptom that revealed a 4 cm complex cyst extending from the skin to the peritoneal cavity.
The case highlights the role of bedside ultrasound and CT imaging in identifying urachal anomalies and guiding treatment. The patient underwent successful surgical excision following broad-spectrum antibiotics.
This publication not only reinforces the importance of maintaining a broad differential in pediatric abdominal complaints but also demonstrates the collaborative and scholarly work coming out of our department!
