Last week, the Department of Emergency Medicine rolled out the red carpet for one of our most creative and anticipated annual traditions, Sono Games 2025.
This year, the competition was reimagined as Sono Sundance: An Ultrasound Film Festival, where clinical excellence met Hollywood flair. What followed was a full day of high-energy, hands-on ultrasound challenges inspired by classic movie genres, designed to push skills, spark creativity, and bring our EM community together in true blockbuster fashion.
Ten teams made up of residents, faculty, and staff competed across a series of creative, film-inspired ultrasound stations. From western shootouts and silent films to romantic comedies, horror flicks, pirate adventures, and even a nod to Jurassic Park, each station brought hands-on learning to life with a unique thematic twist.
The event featured everything from scanning-based flip-cup challenges to ultrasound-guided treasure hunts—each designed to combine clinical skill-building with teamwork, creativity, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. Teams walked away with great memories, and a few earned special recognition with custom awards in true film festival style.
Special thanks to our faculty and volunteers for their energy, costumes, and commitment to making this year’s event a success. And a very big and heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Katy Larimore for leading the charge and coordinating the event with unmatched enthusiasm and precision.
We can’t wait to see what next year’s Sono Games has in store. Stay tuned for the next blockbuster!
