Welcome to Your Emergency Medicine Elective!

We’re excited to be part of your growth as a physician—whether your goal is to pursue Emergency Medicine or another specialty. Over the course of this rotation, you’ll be involved in all aspects of emergency care, learning directly from faculty, residents, and your peers, while expanding your clinical knowledge and skillset.


How to Register


Orientation & Didactics

On Day 1, we will host your first didactics session in the McGovern Skills Lab as a pre-warm-up to upcoming sessions. This orientation introduces you to our expectations, workflow, and provides a preview of hands-on skills labs, simulation, and procedural workshops.

  • Visiting / Elective / APC Students: Attendance at weekly EM Residency conferences and student didactics is required.
  • Ambulatory Students: Attendance at weekly conferences and didactics is not required, but all assigned ambulatory coursework must be completed as directed by the coordinator.

Shift Schedule & Expectations

Shift Times:

  • Day: 6am–2pm
  • Evening: 2pm–10pm
  • Night: 10pm–6am

Rotation Sites:

  • Memorial Hermann (Medicine, Trauma, Pediatrics)
  • LBJ (Gold Pod, Critical Care)
    • Students will complete 14 shifts over the rotation, attending all assigned clinical and didactic activities punctually.

On-Shift Expectations

  • Patient Ownership: Function as if you were an intern; pre-read nursing notes, vitals, and assess patient acuity.
  • Presentations: Present patients to both upper-level residents and attending physicians; obtain attending approval prior to procedures or consults.
  • Documentation: Work on clinical notes for practice; do not submit officially in Epic for co-sign.
  • Safety: PPE is available; follow institutional guidelines. Report needle sticks immediately.
