In 2011, United Way of Greater Houston chose to offer the Sacred Vocation Program to professionals staffing their 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE, which provides free information and referral assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“United Way of Greater Houston chose Sacred Vocation to nurture HELPLINE staff in mind, body and spirit to ensure that they are able to respond in a thoughtful and caring way to every caller. Staff teams created individual team mission statements and developed an oath that would guide their work. The Sacred Vocation experience encourages HELPLINE staff to regard their work as a sacred vocation, one that reinforces United Way’s commitment of supporting the well-being of all.” — President & CEO Anna Babin
Post SVP evaluations documented that 100% of participants felt the sessions to be beneficial and 100% would recommend the program to co-workers.
Comments from United Way staff participating in the SVP:
- “What a delight to be part of this process. I found the entire experience to be very rewarding.”
- “This was an opportunity to share workplace trials and tribulations, I feel enriched by the input and understanding of my co-workers. A bond was forged in respect to doing the best we can with each other.”
- “The SVP helped me set priorities daily long before the program ended.”
