The Division holds a number of conferences on a weekly basis, whose goal is to provide advanced education in pediatric critical care medicine for our fellows, residents, and medical students and to foster the continuing medical education of our faculty. In addition, our faculty and fellows as well as medical residents and students, who are rotating through the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), attend departmental and institutional conferences.
- Currently most divisional conferences and meetings are held on Tuesday through Thursday of every week starting from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the 9th Floor PICU conference room.
- Subspecialty resident on clinical service is excused from the patient round for the conferences. Residents on research rotation are also mandated to attend Thursday’s conferences.
- Attendance is monitored for these conferences for the whole division. PCCM residents are expected to attend >80% of scheduled conferences.
- It is the responsibility of the subspecialty resident to notify Martha DeLaney if he/she is not able to attend the conferences for any reason as soon as possible via email or phone.
Journal Club is held once a month. This is primarily a fellow run conference with ideally two articles reviewed by two fellows. Faculty, fellows, residents, and students participate in Journal Club by presenting and discussing current clinical, translational, and basic science journal articles relevant to pediatric critical care medicine.
Fellowship Board Review Course
The Fellowship Board Review Course is held every week. To prepare our fellows to successfully complete the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Board Examination, fellows practice solving board questions. One of the fellows present five board type questions from multiple available courses for PCCM board reviews.
Case based Conference
Case Presentation is held every week. Faculty and fellows who are on clinical service that week present important or unique cases encountered in the PICU to the other members of the division so that the diagnosis and management of these cases can be discussed in detail.
Morbidity and Mortality Conference
The Morbidity and Mortality Conference is held on the last Thursday of every month. This multidisciplinary conference provides an opportunity for faculty and fellows to have an in-depth discussion of the issues related to PICU cases where morbidity or mortality has occurred and learn the process of peer review and performance improvement.
The Research Conference is held on the third Thursday of every month. These conferences include speakers both inside and outside of the division covering research topics. These conferences also provide an opportunity for our faculty and fellows to present their research findings to the division.
